The Haunting of Sharon Tate (2019) – Hilary Duff as Sharon Tate?

No, I don’t want to make a joke about “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” with this film. We play adults here, there is no YouTube comment section crap or anything. We just have to think this movie never exist. So, let’s jump into it. Charles Manson, a name you may already be familiar. When talking about Sharon Tate, we always talk about this figure. This year, to be exact last August, we marked the 50 years of the Charles Manson family; in Los Angeles, they were murdering eight people and committing terror. Not surprisingly, various kinds of media and others are also trying to take advantage of this incident.

In 1969, we will never forget the most terrible and terrifying terror ever, especially in Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino has explored this incident in the form of an alternate universe in his latest work. However, we will never forget the fate of Sharon Tate, his friends, and family at that time. And from here, Daniel Farrands‘ came up with a horror film inspired by true events. The premise is simple, based on the premise of Tate own death. Farrands no longer need to direct this incident as an edgy movie with so much cutting edge. There is no sense of everything.

The first sequence shot in black and white. One thing from this sequence also is that they recreate the real footage like a documentary. Might just want to say this is a mockumentary or anything. Introduced Hilary Duff as Sharon Tate, the most prominent character ever. One ridiculous thing I want to mention again is that this sequence opened with Edgar Allen Poe’s poem entitled “A Dream Within a Dream”. This movie is like a merger of horror, thriller, slasher, documentary, and trying so hard to be the next David Lynch especially the ending which didn’t make any sense.

Tate saw everything, saw a fragment of the future that she would die. She saw everything, saw all his family and herself being killed. There is a psychopath peering in her house. Duff’s monologue was also inspired by the real Sharon Tate documentary of her wedding day. The worse thing is this film doesn’t expose the story itself or arguably a little as well. Instead, they took even worse steps. They showed everything, showing the real footage of the Manson murders. Even worse, there is a real footage when the bodies are carried out of the house in the horrible morning. So jarring.

I mean, how many times has Hollywood or others exploited such a terrifying event, a real-life horrible event? Well, we never counted it at all and it would be ridiculous if all of it didn’t require permission from the victim. Anyway, the film jumps back one year later precisely on August 1969. Tate now pregnant and lives in a house in the hills while waiting for the arrival of her husband, Roman Polanski, to return from Europe. Abigail Folger (Lydia Hearst) and Wojciech Frykowski (Pawel Szajda) accompanied Sharon Tate. There is also her ex, Jay Sebring (Jonathan Bennett).

In this movie, Sharon Tate feels restless about her future events and situations. She saw many things ranging from rotten meat in the refrigerator and other odd things. Her friends only thought that she was just hallucinating and from here, I realized how cartoonish and sketchy the actors were. All of them have no personality at all, there is no real or pure relationship between characters, and there is no backstory at all regardless they play a real-life person. However, it’s not the actor’s fault they all didn’t have what the audience wants to see or the dialogue as well.

The dialogue is just so cheesy and cliché like all of these characters didn’t want to do with this movie or act at all. They like not aware of all this. What’s more, almost this film has a dream sequence when Tate dreams of being stabbed with a knife. There is blood everywhere and others but it’s not real. Instead, all of those events almost happen in dreams as it happens every time. It’s also ridiculous if this film talks about the philosophy of destiny or the timeline because we know all of this happens in dreams.

Daniel Farrands seems to use a surrealism approach but with his own version, as we’ve never seen films like this before. Are we really that stupid to be able to guess whether this is real or a dream? And the worse of them is the ending, like, so all of this is real and not a dream? It’s not really spoilers if you really care with this movie, but this is nor “Mulholland Drive”.

Alternate history or whatever, I prefer Hilary Duff to be the only psycho in this film. No pun intended. And the music is just worse like the loud sound when there is no event at all or when Tate just stands in the middle of the room. I know that this is horror but it’s just not scared me at all. Or am I the only one that can’t make a difference if you have to be scared in some scene or you have to laugh?

The Manson murders have become part of pop culture in movies, books, songs, documentaries, and other mediums. However, it’s very difficult to include this film in such lists. “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” is just an exploitative movie without knowing the direction and purpose, never giving anything away, and only using Sharon Tate’s name as a patch. And can I talk about the 10 minutes to end-credit? Like, they don’t have anything to be a feature-length movie, right? Or I might be wrong and hallucinate.
