Teasing Master Takagi-san (Winter 2018) – The Greatest Trick the Teaser Ever Pulled

Ah, “Teasing Master Takagi-san”. It feels like watching “Tom and Jerry” but it’s an anime. It feels like watching Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in action playing wordplay. But, this is just your typical slice of life, romance, comedy show. So, why don’t you think about as its? Well, it’s a predictable show and sounds monotonous when you first see it. Simply, I think this is more of a relatable romance between two main characters playing with each other. I mean, it’s one of those shows. It’s more than anything when it comes to romance.

This is a simple anime romance, to begin with. It’s about Takagi who always plays on Nishikata. Nishikata, on the other hand, wants to reciprocate by playing back. However, he always gets a counter-attack. It’s just that it’s a show that really easily falls in love with this show. Between the chemistry of the main characters, a romance vague arises. Besides romance, they both always walked together from going to school and going home. They play various kinds of cheating games whether in sports, wordplay, lesson or guessing.

This is a slice of life anime that is not many things I can say. Besides these two characters, there are not-related side characters to the couple. This concept is also often used in “Nichijou”. The chemistry between the two characters is also very similar to “My Neighbor Seki”. But, a boundary separates the anime into one unique piece.

Takagi is a smart girl. With her cute face and sweet personality, she is like an overpowered character in an anime romance. She often assembled various plot twists for Nishikata so that even us was often cheated. On the other side, she is a smart and kind person. Behind it all, she has a unique way of approaching Nishikata. Regardless, she likes Nishikata just like the first impression of the episode. Indeed, it is rather difficult to see her character other than just playing on Nishikata. But, just looks closely and watch it go.

Nishikata is a deceptive boy who always pays attention to Takagi so he forgets about his surroundings too. He was very difficult to read a situation even overanalyzed by what Takagi planned or did. But, there is one segment where he is attacking Takagi besides he is not aware of it. Regardless of which, he is like a toy or puppet doll. In this case, it’s just a romance and slice of life anime with no drama. Drama is not a strong element in this matter. Except for one segment in the last episode, it’s quite emotional when there are a meeting and separation. I mean, it’s not a spoiler I think because I know what is waiting behind it.

This is a show but more than Nishikata as a toy and Takagi as a teasing master. It’s a show where the audience waits for a plot twist from the master’s mind. From those simple games, there is so much build-up with such a technical way. It’s like a game of mind but it’s not psychological. It’s a comedy show that is waiting for us from beyond and corner. The chemistry between them honestly has no development or dynamic. But, I think that’s not the key. It’s a slice of life show. It’s a rom-com show.

“Tomorrow’s Saturday” is another project in this show. Both have the same writer, Souichirou Yamamoto. I think it’s just another trick to make a story other than Nishikata and Takagi. There is no connection whatsoever and the purpose is only to make a comedy differently from the others. I also don’t think that these characters need to be get rid of it. They also never met and only saw each other. Even though they were in one class, they never seemed to mention or greet each other’s names. It’s just another thing to come with comedy. I mean, this show is a pure comedy with a natural outcome.

Besides having a similar story, “My Neighbor Seki” and “Teasing Master Takagi-san” were worked on by the same studio. “Sweetness & Lightning” is just another great work for them. But, Shin-Ei Animation, in this case, has a simple visual. On the other hand, there are so much beautiful, charming, bright, and sweet elements. In addition to simple visuals, the facial expressions of its characters are the best. I mean, how come if you can’t stand Takagi’s smile? It’s like, she’s breaking the 4th wall and it seems like she knows it’s you. Nishikata always expressly a goofy expression. It’s like, Yuki Kaji could play anything. He plays a goofy character superbly. The incredible voice acting with Rie Takahashi is really great. I love the opening theme song. It’s like a romance story blossoming back in the spring. The ending theme songs, all of them, are great and very catchy.

“Teasing Master Takagi-san” is a simple anime but there is more than anything with it. The chemistry between characters never been unfair. I mean, there are some that I don’t think are too funny. Awkward is also not a good word for saying minor problems. I mean, awkward in funny terms. But, this is a good slice of life anime with romance if you notice it closely. A show that I definitely watched repeatedly similar to “Nichijou”. Light comedy with no drama element if you like it. So much fun and charming in this show.

4 out of 5 stars.
